Mumbai to Kolkata train tickets: what to do when it is full
Seats on this route run out fast around festivals and school holidays. A waiting-list ticket is not a seat, but there are usually more options than the first screen shows.
Which stations to use
From Mumbai, trains on this route leave from LTT, CSMT, Dadar, Thane, Kalyan. At Kolkata, services arrive at Howrah, Santragachi, Shalimar, Kolkata (Chitpur), Sealdah. Always check the boarding and arrival station on your ticket, because the same city has several stations and timings and fares can differ.
How long it takes
Expect roughly 30 to 38 hours, depending on the train and its stops. Exact timings change with each railway timetable, so confirm them on NTES or IRCTC before you travel.
If the train is full
An agent can check the days before and after, other trains, other boarding stations, and connecting journeys through Nagpur, Bhusawal, Tatanagar. A bus is rarely practical over this distance, so a connecting train is usually the better fallback. Message your route and date and the agent will call with what is available.
When it fills up
Demand peaks around Durga Puja in October, Diwali, Christmas and New Year, and the summer holidays. If you already know your dates, ask early.
We do not book tickets and we do not take money for them. A verified local agent does the booking and tells you the full amount before you pay. Nobody can guarantee a seat on a full train.
