Waiting list ticket: what are your options?

A waiting-list ticket is not a seat. Whether it confirms depends on cancellations before the chart is prepared, and nobody can promise it.

How a waiting list gets confirmed

Seats move up the waiting list when other passengers cancel. The chart is usually prepared a few hours before departure, and your position can keep moving until then. RAC is closer to a seat: you are allowed to board and get a place to sit, and a full berth if someone cancels. An online ticket that is still waiting when the chart is made is cancelled automatically and refunded.

What to look at

The kind of waiting list (GNWL, RLWL or PQWL), your position, how many days are left, and how full that train usually runs. A low position several days ahead often clears. A high one the day before a festival rarely does.

If it looks unlikely

A local agent can check other trains on the same route, connecting trains through a nearby junction, a different boarding or alighting station, the day before or after, another class, and buses. Message your route and date and the agent will call with what is available.

We do not book tickets and we do not take money for them. A verified local agent does the booking and tells you the full amount before you pay. Nobody can guarantee a seat on a full train.
